Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer but had successful surgery to remove a lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin.
He had the 90-minute surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and was then diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
The Vatican said the Pope woke “normally” and had “a brief period of observation”.
This diagnosis comes after the lump was detected during routine checks.
